National Discussion Meeting on Intuitive Knowledge in Vedanta and Modern Science: Characterization, Evidence and Implications

29 November 2018

Venue: Conference Hall

Motivation: The existence and the power of intuitive knowledge (IK) has been generally recognized; however, a precise narration and a systematic methodical approach to IK are not yet available in modern science. On the other hand, IK (in the form of Vidya) is not only well recognized but considered as the foundation of the Vedantic Knowledge System, propounded in the Upanishads. While the precise methodology of acquiring or accessing IK is cryptic and may even appear vague to the uninitiated mind, its centrality as a pathway to knowledge is clearly stated in the Vedanta. The enormous transformative potential of IK in different spheres of education and learning is obvious. However, imprecise and even erroneous translation of the vedantic concepts as well as lack of empirical approach has made IK appear vague and even irrelevant to the modern mind.

Background: A National Workshop on Mind, Consciousness and Beyond was jointly organized with NIAS, Bangalore under the CSIR-NISTADS programme on Interfacing Science with Traditional Knowledge (ISTK). The participants included scientists, vedic scholars and thought leaders from a number of organizations across the country. The agenda was organized to include topics from both science and vedantic knowledge system. A web portal ( was launched at CSIR-NISTADS website ( with registration facility for ISTK in general and the Workshop in particular to reach out to a wide section of scholars and scientists across the country and beyond. The event provided a platform for synthesis of vedantic principles and scientific methods and generated specific recommendations; the proposed Meeting on Intuitive Knowledge in Vedanta and Modern Science: Characterization, Evidence and Implications draws from this background.

Scope: The proposed meeting will bring together scholars and experts in Vedanta as well as modern scientific processes to explore IK in an empirical framework. The Discussions will focus on:

  •  Intuitive Knowledge: Narration & Characterization
  • Intuitive Knowledge in Vedic Knowledge System
  • Modern Scientific Perspective of Intuitive Knowledge
  • Implications of Intuitive Knowledge
  • Empirical explorations on Intuitive Knowledge

The event is a part of CSIR-NISTADS’ quest for alternate and better pathways for transformative development; religious and religio-political issues are excluded from the discussion. A highlight of the meeting will be a critical review of the CSIR-NISTADS’ experiments on Intuitive Cognition

Participants: The participation in the event will by invitation and will include scholars and thought leaders with knowledge of Vedanta and modern scientific methodologies

Outcome: A clear narration of intuitive knowledge based on vedantic principles and modern science along with recommendations and a roadmap for integrating intuitive knowledge to empirical exploration and learning through a synthesis of vedantic principles and modern scientific methods.
